The City of Hackensack is taking significant strides to reduce flooding and reduce overflows (CSO) of its combined sewer system, which conveys both sanitary and stormwater flows. In so doing, the City seeks to reduce the impacts of flooding and stormwater pollution upon its residents and the local environment. Measures include combined sewer separation projects, stormwater capacity improvements, a large flood hazard mitigation project, and the <a href="https://www.nnjcf.org/climate-action-mobilization-project-camp/giej/">Green Infrastructure for Environmental Justice </a>Project with the Northern New Jersey Community Foundation. In this webinar, we will learn more about the strategies the City is taking to manage stormwater and CSO, including implementing new requirements associated with the City’s latest MS4 and NJPDES permits.

Course Description
The New Jersey statute (P.L. 2021, c.183) enacted on July 22, 2021 requires a series of compliance deadlines for action by public water systems pursuant to the removal of all Lead Service Lines (LSLs) within 10 years. Water systems must now update their inventories and replace their lead service lines, both utility and customer-owned by 2031. Planning, executing, and troubleshooting are all parts of project management. The law sets forward an aggressive timeline and a funding challenge. The Watershed Institute welcomes you to our Sixth Annual Watershed Conference on February 10, 2023 and February 17, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The two-day event will be held in-person at The Watershed Institute with the option to attend virtually.

Most waterways in New Jersey are impaired due to polluted stormwater runoff from overdevelopment. Previous efforts to tackle these issues largely focused on municipalities working separately from one other, however water does not confine itself to political boundaries. Municipal leaders, engineers, watershed advocates, and community members must work together across municipal boundaries, in a regional approach, to repair our degraded waterways, a problem worsened by the impacts of climate change with more intense and frequent storms.

At the conference, learn about new Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) requirements and solutions that go beyond the proposed minimum standards. We will explore existing tools and learn how to engage our communities through roundtable discussions and interactive sessions. Three conference tracks will be offered to present the most relevant information for municipal representatives, engineers and stormwater implementation professionals, and the general public. Together, we can use the new MS4 requirements as an opportunity to advocate for local and regional solutions that restore our waterways.

<div class="controls">The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) invites communities to join our webinar to learn how the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) funding will help communities improve their water and wastewater infrastructure. The BIL will invest $43.4 billion through the State Revolving Funds, with a significant portion of funding provided as grants or principal forgiveness loans to disadvantaged communities through Clean Water State Revolving Funds (CWSRFs) and Drinking Water State Revolving Funds (DWSRFs).</div>

The new $15 billion in federal funding for lead service line replacements, as vital and historic as it is, is dwarfed by the estimated $47 billion need to address this public health crisis, one that affects primarily the most vulnerable and needy among us, often people of color. It is possible for local water leaders to close this funding gap. WaterNow Alliance and Environmental Policy Innovation Center will host a 1-hour virtual webinar for utility and community leaders nationwide on how they can access capital markets to maximize access to federal funding and accelerate the rate of lead line replacements on private property.
The webinar has 5 objectives—
1. Highlight the One Water and multiple community benefits of replacing lead service lines, particularly on private properties where they are the most prevalent and most likely to be harming disadvantaged households and communities of color. 
2. Feature perspectives from capital market investors about their interest in investing in lead service line replacement programs as a sound investment and to accelerate these needed replacements and protect public health. 
3. Equip participants with the knowledge of how to leverage local financing approaches to maximize access to federal dollars and accelerate the pace of replacements. 
4. Feature a real-world case study from communities and utilities replacing lead service lines at a faster pace than most. 
5. Answer questions about how to leverage capital markets for lead service line replacements.

Introducing River Network’s new resource on tracking common sources of pollution and tools for community action in the Delaware Basin! Join us on January 31st at 10am to learn about tools and programs that can help you and your volunteers identify pollution sources – including combined sewer overflows, improperly maintained construction sites, road salt, and flooding &#8211; and take action. You’ll also learn about how groups in the Delaware and throughout the country have created innovative programs to combat these threats to water quality health.
We will hear from Elizabeth Cute of Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper about their bacteria monitoring program and action steps they have taken on CSO discharges and water quality impairments. Ryan Neuman of Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership (TTF) and Dave Bell, TTF volunteer, will discuss their experiences with monitoring and reporting on failing construction site pollution controls and notifying their local decision-makers on excessive road salt application and implications for their local streams.

As a community member or community organization you have a chance to provide needed input on the most recent New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) proposed strategies and projects to reduce flooding and sewage overflows.
We want to support you to participate and offer your comments with ease and impact.
NJDEP is giving the public 60 days—until February 13, 2023—to comment – in writing and orally – on the recently released DRAFT North Bergen/Guttenberg, NJ CSO Permit (which allows certain strategies and projects to be implemented).
If you live or work in North Bergen’s Woodcliff Neighborhood or in Guttenberg, we highly encourage your participation. Jersey Water Works Lead Service Line (LSL) Implementation Workgroup and New Jersey Water Association invite you to join us on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, 11:00 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. for a workshop designed to help water utilities navigate the LSL replacement looming compliance deadlines.

Why this matters: 
The New Jersey statute (<a href="https://www.njleg.state.nj.us/Bills/2020/PL21/183_.HTM">P.L. 2021, c.183</a>) enacted on July 22, 2021 requires a series of compliance deadlines for action by public water systems pursuant to the removal of all Lead Service Lines (LSLs) within 10 years. Public water systems must develop a service line inventory and prepare a plan to replace all LSLs within 10 years by July 2022 (with updates thereafter) and must periodically notify customers whose property is served by a LSL. The NJ Department of Environmental Protection released its <a href="https://www.nj.gov/dep/watersupply/">guidelines </a>for the submission of the Lead Service Line Replacement Plan on May 17, 2022.

Join us for the first in-person Jersey Water Works Membership Meeting since 2019.  Don’t miss the chance to collaborate with other water leaders, advocates, and decision makers during this pivotal time of funding opportunities and legislative changes for water infrastructure. Jersey Water Works believes that collaboration is the only way to advance forward-thinking strategies.
For the last seven years, the annual Membership Meeting has allowed participants to connect, share updates, and advance the conversation about New Jersey’s water infrastructure. Water infrastructure transformation is complicated and systemic solutions take time and investment. Your perspective is essential to the conversation. Share your ideas by engaging in conversations, asking questions, and having one-on-one conversations with your peers.

In honor of World Water Day on March 22, Jersey Water Works, Sustainable Jersey , and New Jersey Future are hosting an evening webinar to share green infrastructure resources for your town.
This webinar will provide information on stormwater resources for towns, including New Jersey Future’s Green Infrastructure Municipal Toolkit, Sustainable Jersey’s green infrastructure actions, and several resources from Jersey Water Works on green streets. Assessing the Affordability of Drinking Water Rates for Small Systems in the Mid-Atlantic

In this webinar for drinking water utilities in the Mid-Atlantic region, presenters from the Environmental Finance Centers at the <a href="https://arch.umd.edu/research-creative-practice/centers/environmental-finance-center" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Maryland</a> and the <a href="https://efc.sog.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of North Carolina</a> will discuss methods to assess the affordability of current or future water rates. The training will cover metrics to consider – beyond Median Household Income – in order to meaningfully gauge the impact of utility costs under different affordability indicators. It will also feature a deep-dive into UNC’s updated Affordability Assessment Tool, which helps utilities make informed decisions regarding water rate changes, and will highlight case stories from around the Mid-Atlantic region.

The Water We Swim In: A Discussion on Water and Equity

Join the Water Center’s virtual Water Exchange Speaker Series at 12 PM on Wednesday, March 2, 2022.
This panel discussion – “The Water We Swim In: A Discussion on Water and Equity” – will look at the importance of pools as tools to help lessen the impacts of climate change on communities of color as well as to examine and address issues of equity and inclusion.
In this one-hour session, our panelists explore the connection between water, social justice, and public health and discuss the lack of safe access to water for recreation.
